February 2008

It's the middle of winter with ice and snow covering our garden beds. Although we cannot work outside we are learning how to nurture plants. Teachers have begun to utilize container gardens with children.

The nursery children (2-3 year olds) have planted a variety of hyacinth, tulip and crocus bulbs. The teachers talked about the importance of placing the bulbs near the sun and the children have faithfully watered them every few days. Through this process the children have been learning the essential things that plants need to grow; soil, water and sun. The children have been measuring the growth of the flowers by placing a ruler alongside the stem and counting each inch that the stem reaches. The children have also been curious about the parts of the plants as they have observed emerge from the soil. Library books, the internet and peers are wonderful assets to research the names for the parts of the plant.

The Kindergarten and Toddler classrooms have decided to tend the Stand Up garden in our community room. The Kindergarten children will mentor the Toddlers during this project. We are excited to watch as this partnership develops. Currently, the garden has been set up and the children are emptying the old soil from the bed.
