John Nimmo, Ed.D.

Executive Director, Child Study and Development Center
Rand Stearns Associate Professor, Department of Family Studies

Born and raised in Australia, John taught and played with infants through school-age children for over a decade before pursuing adult education. Prior to coming to the CSDC in 2003 John spent a decade on the faculty at Pacific Oaks College, known for its anti-bias curriculum and support of children's play. His publications include the popular NAEYC book Emergent Curriculum and contributions to The Hundred Languages of Children drawn from his study and research related to the Reggio Emilia Approach in Italy. John's writing currently focuses on the connections between young children in child care and the broader adult community. John holds a doctorate in early childhood education and development from the University of Massachusetts in Amherst. At CSDC John focuses on the development of a professional and research-oriented staff, a deepened understanding of the impact of culture and diversity, and continued exploration of inquiry-based early education with children, their families, and pre-service teachers.
