Research Project: I chose to do my undergraduate research on composting because I strongly believe how we choose to consume is vital in order to sustain what is important for all of us. It is a discouraging fact that currently more and more of our resources are unnecessarily discarded and sent to waste sites where they no longer benefit anyone.

Along with several other interns, I assisted the UNH Office of Sustainability with their compost program. Our primary objective was to recycle food and agriculture waste that is generally sent to the dump. These resources included food waste from on-campus dining halls, greenhouses and the UNH poultry facility. We also collected from several Durham businesses. Currently it has been our responsibility to weigh everything we collect to estimate the amount of waste produced.

Through this research we hope to convey to everyone an understanding of one of the main principles of sustainable living: Eat what you take and take only what you will eat.
